fuel system, delayed starting

Owner of 1997 9000 cse, manual trans. A few months ago I noticed additional cranking time needed before engine started. Once started, the engine runs fine. I replaced the fuel feed check valve on top of the pump, but no results. Is the fuel system designed to remain under pressure at all times? If I crack the injector 17MM nut at the end of the injectors, should fuel spray out under pressure even after sitting overnight? If this does not occur, any thoughts?
