hi sorry to hear that you family is experiencing this, my wife didn't like it either.

First what year is your car, and are you the original owner? Curious of you had the throttle body replaced?

When this happens, how do you get the car going again?

When this happens, does the gas pedal get very hard to push? If so then I susspect you are in Limp Home Mode (LHM) which is a mode that cars with Traction Control (TC) have to allow you to drive when it believes that a component has failed. The unit on the firewall may have gone bad. Does this happen more when hot outside or after getting the car hot (freeway or long drive)? There is a resistance that it's supposed to be and when it starts failing the resistance gets above about 100 ohms. IF you can, next time you are experinecing the LHM unplug the connector on the unit at the firewall (push the wire bail into the connector to unlock and allow you to pull connector off) and measure the resistance. a $10 meter from any home improvement, sears or the like will be close enough. measure that one, and then twin on the fender. If the fender one is much less resistance consider swappping them and see how it goes.
