My 92 9000 turbo has 132K miles on it. Just drove from AZ to FL and back this summer. The serpentine belt broke while in FL, cost me $381 to replace plus 2 pulleys at an AAA-approved garage. Once back home, had trouble getting into 1st & 2nd gears, knew that was the shift coupler, an easy fix. Then it would only drive in 3rd, which is when it was towed to the repair shop. After looking at the clutch, it was determined only 1 part needed to be replaced, not the entire clutch assembly, got off easy on that one. But on doing a road test, there was still something clunking around in the trans. It was $500 just to pull the trans, which will be applied towards whatever else needs fixing. Turns out the entire trans needs replacing now. I have put more than $8K into this car, almost everything is new under the hood, plus an Alpine stereo/CD and speakers. Would my mechanic be better off finding an old Saab for parts and taking an old trans out for my car or finding a new one? Funny thing was, before the road trip, got 2 new rear tires since the front were fairly new and replaced the spare. The spare was from 1990, had never even hit the pavement once, just sat in the wheel well all those years! My ? is: do I cut my losses and get a new car or keep fixing this one up? The body is in excellent condition as is the inside. The only cosmetic fix that is needed is new ceiling fabric, which is falling down over the rear seat. And I really love my car.
