With my new holding tool, with holes for the bolts 4 3/4" on centers, bolts measure just over 4 1/2" apart.
Switched back to my 6 point socket and it worked just fine, with the new breaker bar, to get enough of an arc to compress the tensioner and fit my new tool.
Spun tension pulley bolt out clockwise with my air wrench, spun bolt out of other idler CCW with 5/8" socket on air wrench, had already cracked the crank bolt loose using the starter and a breaker bar, so all's out and cleaning up for new seal, new belt.
I wish I'd ordered the idlers too, will get them soon and put in. On both idlers, the seal lip is missing on outer face - - worn off by shreds of the belt wrapping around and sitting there grinding I think. I'll re-lube these for now. They're bakelite wheels made onto the bearings, so there's no renewing them with stock shelf bearings from a local source.
And, anyone doing this should also know, you NEED the breaker bar so you can angle it back towards the block and have it come up into the space between inner fender wall and engine. (Cheater on ratchet, angle is wrong and cocks the socket.) And needs to be 1/2" drive, the force is too great for cheating up a 3/8" drive breaker to do it.
Also know, I think I figured out that you can certainly use a 6 point socket anywhere a 12 seems needed; I'm a little shaky on the math but figure, if the points on the socket come every 1/6 of a circle and the points on the drive come every 1/4 of a circle, turning the socket 1/4 turn on the breaker should yield a different position for the hex and it will fit where you might have thought you needed a 12 point. Look down in a 6 point socket and you'll see it.
I plan to email Quasi to get him to reword his site's tool specs.
Here's what he said, that I followed: "Two 1/4" bolts secured by nuts in a piece of angle-iron about 5 1/2" long by 1" wide. The bolt hole spacing is nominally 4 1/2" for 94 and later." No, he didn't say ON CENTERS but that's how it's usually stated and that's what I figured. He usually idiot proofs his advice; I'm kind of surprised, but I guess I'm a special breed of idiot. I really wanted this to go smooth and pre-made the tool - wrong.
