The second one I made, 4 3/4" on centers, yielded just over 4 1/2" between bolts, maybe 4 5/8", and worked like a charm, easy to put on, held arm close enough that even with new unstretched belt, ONCE I CAREFULLY MADE SURE BELT WAS IN THE GROOVES OF ALL THE PULLEYS, there was room to slip the tensioner idler pulley back into place and slip the bolt through it and retighten it.
That was even after my holder, made of heavy aluminum angle, bent some at one end under the pressure of holding and let that bolt angle out a little further than 4 1/2".
I may cut another piece of the same aluminum angle, a little longer, say 6 1/2", so it sticks out a good ways past the holes and won't bend, to keep on hand for future use.
Still haven't emailed Quasi, aka John Peed, but I plan to today.
I'm glad in a way to hear someone else had the same frustration, sorry for you though as it was no fun thinking I'd done everything right but still couldn't make it work. Self doubt, and $30 extra expense, though now I have the 1/2" breaker bar I should have bought years ago.
