It's mounted directly below the radiator. It actually looks like an extension of the radiator. One of the ATF hoses comes out of the tranny, goes into the radiator, then one comes out of the radiator and into the ATF cooler, then the last one comes out of the cooler and back into the tranny.
And as for the type of ATF, I have used Castrol Dexron-III for all of my fluid changes. I do them every 15K miles, and in a succession of 3 flush-and-fills (driving the car around for 15 minutes in between each drain), to make sure that all the old fluid has been drained out of the torque converter. Figure on buying 15 quarts to complete this. Put in the new ATF filter after the last drain.
This has worked for me with no problems for 7+ years and 90K miles. Still shifts smoothly (and this is with a Stage 3 set-up).
