Rear door mechanism not working both sides- frozen

Wife called from work that she put her computer in the back seat of the car, closed the door, started the car and noticed that the 'open door' light was on. Door wouldn't latch. So she opened the other back door. It wouldn't latch either! I picked her up, tied the doors together, and drove the car home. An hour in my above freezing garage and the doors are fine.
So I should be pleased that it all is well, but I've never had this happen before on either of my '95 9ks and not read about it here. I'd like to know why and how to prevent, if possible. I did try spraying WD40 in the exterior door mechanism, to no avail.
Here are the circumstances. This am was in the 50s and raining. By 6pm when she came home temp was 20 with high winds with this front all day. The handles in and out were floppy as though the mechanism was not connected. The outside door mechanism, ie the latch that is supposed to hook the pin on the body rotated freely.
Suggestions?
