2x4 or baseball bat? I have read past posts on this temporary repair technique and in fact tried it once on one of our 9000s. When the pump gets marginal, it doesn't take much to freeze it up - e.g a small particle of grit, ice, or whatever. The shock dislodges it and gets you going. I carry a wood mallet just in case (see picture).
