Yes, I am well aware of the danger to the starter as I just finished replacing the starter about 12 hours ago.
I don't think that you can engage the starter when the engine is already running because I've noticed on all my other SAAB's that when you turn the key while the engine is already running, the starter is locked out. It just resets all the electronics. What I believe happened is that 2 weeks ago when we were having below zero weather, my dad went out to start the truck (sticking starter solenoid when cold) and the car (it's actually his car) because it has a battery that is starting to go weak and he thought that starting/running it first thing in the morning would help by keeping the battery charged. I think he forgot to turn the key back from the original start, which would leave the starter engaged. When I went to leave later in the day with his car (my 2000 AERO was up on jacks with it's oil pan removed that week - oil screen was clogged even with 5000 mi oil changes) there was not even a click from the starter. I found a replacement at a junkyard for $50. When I got the old one off, there are some parts rattling around in the solenoid. I'll take it apart later to see what actually failed in it later.
So the electrical switch will be ordered later today so that it doesn't happen again.
I also found lots of vacuum hoses that were falling apart, and found where the engine temperature wire had cracked insulation and was rubbing against the block causing the temp guage to bounce all around. So I made some good progress on it last night.
Thanks for your help,
Michael
