As you've been advised. Starter certainly WILL engage with ignition on, and stay engaged if not returned since there's no spring. That's what happened to your starter.
Be gentle turning your key - - even a weakling can over-twist it and have it shear and lose the return spring function. I took the old ignition switch part apart after I did this to see what had happened. The spring's tail is held by a kind of flimsy sticking-out piece, of pot metal that is easy to shear off.
Thank Dad for his kindness but start it yourself from now on.
My local Saab dealer had the switch on the shelf and even just went to get it, didn't even have to look up the number. This must happen a lot.
