One bulb burned out can cause the EDU to go dark. More than one bulb can go out at nearly the same time, if they are old. My 92's EDU display was out when I got it. Then sometimes it would work intermittently, due to weak filaments a couple of the 3 lamps. Replaced all 3 lamps and it's been working since.
If the actual EDU unit is working you will see a very faint display if you shine a flash light you should see a very faint display.
Another cause could be the photocell sensor in the Analog clock or SCC Trip computer, has gone bad. This controls the light level on the EDU display.
