It's been a while since I've been here! The Aero's had mixed duty since I got the Miata, but I've been driving both off and on. I went to drive the Aero (a 94, BTW) and it wouldn't start. Hadn't been a week since it was last driven, and it ran fine the last outing.
Specifically, it cranked over about 3 or 4 times, sounded like it was going to fire, then began to "free crank" like it had lost compression suddenly. I tried a few more times, and it sounded the same and wouldn't start. So that day I drove the Swedish Ford (aka Volvo) to work.
I tried again to start the Aero later and found that after cranking for maybe 10 seconds and then turning off the key, I'd hear a "phooht" somewhere in the engine bay like a valve was releasing pressure somewhere. Also, if I cranked a little longer, I'd hear a Pop when the spark plug burn off would occur from the DI cassette. If I'm guessing correctly, it sounds like I'm getting both fuel and spark, so I'm wondering what could be causing the compression loss. (I admit I haven't done a compression test yet because our Cali weather has been a bit uncooperative.)
For background, the car has about 160k miles, has had the DI Cassette replaced, a new fuel pump, and a valve job/ head gasket replacement in the last 50k miles, and all the vacuum hoses replaced as well. I can't see any signs of critter damage or broken wires or hoses, but I had a strange (and likely unrelated) problem a while ago that is also unresolved; Fuse 9, the 30 amp fuse controlling the back-up lights, the sunroof, and the cigarette lighter keeps blowing for "no reason" or at least one that I can find.
Can the two problems be related, or (more importantly) why won't my Baby start? I tried to read The Codes tonight, but am not sure how to do that now. I turned on the ignition and waited for something to flash, but nothing did. If anyone could repost the procedure for me, or offer any other advice, I'd appreciate it!
