The start position uses a different set of contacts than the instrument lights, so it is unlikely that all those sets of contacts would be bad, then good.
I'd suspect that there was a little bit of corrosion on the battery clamps, and the first couple of false starts cleared it out. Or just a bad connection on a main relay. I'd pull off the battery clamps and clean up the insides of the clamps and the outside of the battery posts.
