Hi Ari and thank you for your help,
To answer your questions: I expect the fan to come on when the temp gauge is slightly above horizontal (that's when it came on before). After replacing the switch, I started the car and just let it idle until the temp gauge went almost to the red (about 10 o'clock), and when the fan didn't turn on, i shut the engine off. Before replacing the switch, the temp gauge stayed about horizontal, and climbed to 10 o'clock only in traffic (5-15 mph)...for fear of overheating, I turned the heater on to "HI" with full fan power, and the temp gauge would drop down to horizontal. As of now, I have not bypassed the new switch - will do that tonight.
