It could be a heater core rupture, but that's not common. More likely a hose burst right by the heater core - lucky you. A burst hose isn't farfetched. And shouldn't be hard to find, just pulling up the aquarium cover should show it.
If you shut the car right down, it should be fine.
The most likely reason for the hose to burst is plain old age. However, after the repair, make sure the car gets a full road test, that the coolant gets hot enough to get the thermostat open, the cooling fan comes on, etc. You don't want them to just put in a hose and replace the coolant, and you find out something is very wrong 10 miles away (don't ask me how I know).
While you're at it, have the coolant flushed. It should be done every 2-3 years, and we don't always do it when we should. Might as well take the opportunity. Heck, if the thermostat is more that 3 years old, get it replaced while the system is open.
It could be the heater core developed a huge crack. But a higher probability is the hose just failed right where it enters the core. Good luck!
