The alternator is a current source into your electrical system. Thanks to guys named Thevenin and Norton, we have electrical models for energy transfer into circuits. If there is the perception at your digital meter that the voltage output level is higher( above 14.3 volts) when measured at the battery, the link to the battery is at a higher impedance than normal.
Either the battery cable has degraded, or one or more of the windings in the alternator is about to fail open.
An alternator is essentially a three phase AC motor with two diodes per phase to generate DC current. To deliver 100 or more amperes to your battery, the output impedance of the alternator needs to be very low, typically less than two ohms. If you are able to crank the engine and start it reasonably quickly, the battery, which is just another capacitor, is fine.
I would replace the alternator if the headlights are bright and the starter works well.
