don't know the make up of the two fuels you mentioned, but the O2 sensor is sometimes sensitive to fuel composition/changes. As it's dying it may set a check engine light, and then later get happy and clear the light, and this may cycle back and forth. consider picking one fuel brand and grade and running that for awhile and see it things settle down. checking the plugs and gap is a good thing to do as well. make them a bit on the small gap (rather than 1.1 go 1.0 or even .95) as the gap widens with wear/burn. don't know about the noise or backfire, but if the O2 sensor is on it's way out it could cause rich running which could be the source of the bang maybe. has the fuel mileage changed? keeping a running total on your mileage is one of the best ways to get a clue that something is amiss before it gets out of hand. fore instance, an O2 sensor that is not working properly will usually give you a drop in fuel mileage, and often before it throws a code.
