Don't know anything about BP's additive package, but Chevron's Techron has a good reputation. Gasoline retailers share a pipeline, but their additive packages are not created alike according to online sources like toptiergas. There are plenty of good brands, and the price of premium is about the same regardless of additive quality.

If you're having a misfire problem, then the CE light should turn on and stay on until the 3rd or 4th trip after the problem has been corrected. That's assuming you don't reset the code with an OBDII scanner or by disconnecting the battery.

You'll have to substitute brains and time for dinero. You can borrow for free an OBDII scanner at most auto parts stores and find out what active and pending trouble codes you have. Look up the codes at this message board to see what the problem may be and how to troubleshoot it. Often times the cure requires you to use your head more than your wallet.

You can with a little know-how and a few tools do things like make sure your gas cap is tight enough (3 clicks or more), make sure vacuum lines are connected, confirm the PCV valve is working, wipe clean the spark plugs and adjust the gaps, etc. Best place to start is the OBDII scan.
