Yes I have an auto. I will check the tranny dispstick - I don't know how else to check for this leak. It sounds plausible, except for the fact that I drove 1000 miles over the weekend. It seems to me that if I had coolant in the tranny, the tranny would probably have given out.
Saab hoses don't last forever. I'm guessing that their life is shorter in hot climates like here in San Diego.
When I was installing my makeshift replacement hose, I made a couple of mistakes. One was not to replace all the 3/4" hose with fresh stuff when I was in there. I decided to keep the molded part of the hose, and that blew. I think the main reason that blew was because I tightened the hose clamp too much - it dug into the weakened hose and weakenend it more. The other mistake was the opposite - I didn't tighten the two hose clamps enough that were on the other end of an adapter for splicing 3/4" hose together. These two clamps were side by side and were clamping the larger hose and the 3/4" hose underneath to the plastic adapter. I thought two would do the job, but they blew off. I was concerned about overtightening the clamps and breaking them, as has happened before. But the whole thing blew apart at one point, and after I put them back together and tightened the clamps more, it held the rest for the remaining 200 miles home.
So make sure you don't either undertighten or overtighten hose clamps. But how to know how tight is the right amount?
