I've had a lot of luck with removing the nuts on these systems. I follow Ari's advise and hit them with PB Blaster a few days before removing, and again just before taking off. My experience is that the rear muffler tends to go twice as fast as the center muffler.
I just replaced the center muffler/resonater on wife's Aero with a heavy duty straight pipe. I used a quality speciality muffler shop, not a Tuffy or Midas type shop. They welded the old ends onto the pipe so I can still bolt things on and off. I'm hoping it lasts longer than the resonater. I'm pretty sure it will outlast a couple of rear mufflers.
If you are rehabbing a '91 it still may be a good idea to just replace everything if the system looks rusty. And one time I did not spray the bolts and ended up cutting, so no guarantees....
