seatback recliner cable sheath advice

I've pulled the passenger seat from my Aero and am looking at two cracked sheaths for the cables (resulting in only one side of the seat moving when trying to move the seat back). I've read the posts but would still like to solicit advice. First, I don't know what happens at the end of the sheath opposite the motor. It goes up into the edge of the seat, and I can't remove it. What holds it in place? It's brittle and will shatter if I try to grab it tightly with some pliers.
I don't want to spend $100 replacing these things. Has anyone done anything other than wrapping a slit hose around the cracked area and tightening tie-wraps around it? That doesn't seem like that is going to work too well because the sheath has no flexibility to it at all. If I pull the sheaths off and patch them up, I think they will just break in a couple of new places when I try to put them back in.
