Been there. I was swapping 95 aero seats into my 97 CSE. The aero seat had the twisting problem due to the broken sheath causing the drive cable to bind.
The 95 tubes i had, like you have said, were as brittle as thin glass.
I found the 97 tubes to be much more pliable. I swapped them over and used them.
To get them out I pulled firmly, with a pliers, straight out of the driven gear where the tube goes in. The tubes have a notch cut into them that seems to 'catch' in that socket.
FWIW, before finally reusing the newer more pliable tubes, I had some 1/4" nylon tubing (very flexible) that I had leftover from some compressed air lines at work. I think it was $20 from Grainger. I was planning on using the last 2 inches of tubing, with the groove, and splice it to the new tubing. Drop me an email I can send you a few feet for you to try if you want.
