Public Service Announcement: Wheel Bearings Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 5 Oct 2009 07:56:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Over the weekend I replaced the noisy front wheel bearing on my 1994 9000 CS Turbo. I have read about the problems using wheel bearings with unknown names, or names that are generally known to be problematic, so I was quite delighted to find a Timken (well regarded US bearing manufacturer) #513126 bearing for the SAAB 9000 available at my local AutoZone for $88, vs. the $225+ that this bearing costs eleswhere - one day delivery. The part turned out to be completly identical to the original bearing that was on my car, and had "SKF - MADE IN ITALY" stamped on the edge of the brake flange. On the bottom of the box it says: "Timken Service Parts are carefully chosen from select manufacturers." SKF is the original manufacturer of this bearing on 9000s, so I guess that's who Timken chose!
I don't know if this is a pricing anomaly or AutoZone trying to unload some slow-moving inventory, but if you need a front wheel bearing, here is a great deal. Other online stores seem to be selling the same bearing for the more normal price.
