wheel bearing woes......again Posted by skibumm100 [Email] (#3255) [Profile/Gallery] (more from skibumm100) on Mon, 5 Oct 2009 06:59:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm losing another wheel bearing on my 97 CSE. This is the second one in two years. The original one was damaged by Sear's Auto when they stripped out one of the lug bolt holes when I bought a set of tires. They installed an aftermarket one that failed right at one year. I spoke to the manager and he said the warranty wheel bearings for three years. I also told him I did some research (at TSN) and found that aftermarket wheel bearings don't last very long. He agreed to buy a genuine Saab wheel bearing from the dealer and install it. They charged him over $400 for it!!!! Anyhow, here I am a little over a year later and it's going again. The front brakes were pulsating really bad so I changed the pads and rotors yesterday. I checked for visible play in the wheel bearing with the car on jacks because I wasn't going to do the brakes if the wheel bearing was bad. With the new brakes and straight rotors you can hear the telltale rubbing of the rotor on the pads going around corners so I know the bearing is going. Still no visible play in the wheel yet. When I pulled off the right front rotor you can see where the rotor had been rubbing on the backing plate. I'm debating putting a used original wheel bearing on it. I've got a 93 CSE parts car but it has over 250K on it. I had to replace the axle a few months ago due to ripped outer CV boots and I noticed the inner tripod boot is now ripped also. I've never had a ripped inner boot, only outers. I did a poor job when I crimped that cheezy retaining clamp for the tripod boot and it looks like that's what caused the rip. I need to find a place to get the mini screw type CV boot clamps. Those work nice. I may see if the manager will put a new Saab wheel bearing in my hand and I'll go away and never come back. At least I know I can do the job right. Otherwise, I get a feeling I'll be on a first name basis with these guys.
