Big Torque Wrench for "rent" Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Mon, 5 Oct 2009 11:25:56 In Reply to: Re: Did they torque it to spec? I also saw some thread damage, and was wondering about that. I assume that it's the nut, since the spindle is probably the hardened steel used for the ball socket on the CV joint. When I get home today I'll probably recheck the torque.
See my post immediately above this chain about AutoZone. I was planning on using the length/weight method, but when I picked up the bearing that I had ordered, I asked if they had a large torque wrench in their loaner tools: yup, 1/2" drive, goes up to 250 ft.lbs. Purchase price is something like $129, but free loan if I return it with the receipt. The largest of my three torque wrenches only goes to 100 ft.lbs., so this worked out well.
I imagine that a lot of their "rentals" turn into sales, just kept by the customers. If this wasn't the only time that I've required more than 100 ft.lbs., I'd probably buy it at this point.
