Broiling hot in my 94 900 CSE

I can't calibrate my ACC. I don't have a 94 owner's manual, but I have a '93 manual and it says to push the "auto" and side vent buttons together to start the calibration. When I do that, absolutely nothing happens. I don't know if the car is supposed to be running or off when you do this and if you are supposed to start with tha Climate control off, but I have tried every single combination I can think of and so far, nothing has ever happened in response to pushing these two buttons simultaneously for a split second, a few seconds, up to several seconds. What am I doing wrong?
Now the bad news. I never really cared that much about my calibration not working because until yesterday the system seemed to work flawlessly. However, suddenly hot air is blowing out of the vents on both econ and auto even when it is 50 deghrees outside and I have it set to "lo". I can turn it off and hot air is still kind of seeping out. I am guessing this is the flapper rod issue, but I am really hoping that is a cheap and easy fix because I am running out of money for these little repairs and issues that keep cropping up.
