After searching this board regarding the same question, I went with Mobil 1's synthetic ATF. It has worked well for several 9000 drivers, and I've been happy with it.
Heat is the #1 enemy of ATF whether it is conventional or synthetic. The synthetics are more heat tolerant. If your wife's car is being driven at MD and isn't used for towing, then that's another reason why you shouldn't lose sleep over the automatic. The bottom portion of the radiator is actually the transmission's cooler. Keep it free of dirt and bugs, and it will do a good job of cooling your ATF.
