If you take the 5 torx bolts out the inner driver will easily come out. There will be a bit of friction due to the o-ring that is present. If you take out the driver, then replace the o-ring with a new one. I had no problem with the 5 torx bolts--my two foot socket extension made removal a breeze. Liek you mentioned, drain the trans oil first to prevent your own version Exxon Valdez.
For added insurance I took out the entire axel and did both boots as well even thoguh the inner was fine. I opted for this because I wanted to ensure that I thoroughly clamped the inner boot clamp well. You'll need the clamp tool and it is too big to effectively operate while in the car.
Now, I found that by using some saran wrap around the tripod bearing before I did any work gave me some peace of mind that those needle bearings would not fall off. Once I was ready to put the inner boot on (out of the car) I removed the saran wrap (no sticky residue or anything).
If you leave the inner driver in the car then my suggestion would be to fasten the big inner boot clamp after you have aligned the axel straight in the hub. This will prevent any sort of twists in the inner boot. I have a slight twist in it now because I clamped it and then pulled the CV joint through the hub--I'll fix it later now that the weather is nice in AZ.
I removed the CV joint to replace the boots as I did not have a puller or press for the tripod bearing. The CV joint was a bit of a pain due to the lock ring in the joint. Either way the job is not too bad but it is messy especially if the old boot has already been ripped up.
good luck.
