Just turn the key on (Don't start the car) and wait for 6 seconds, the CEL should start to flash and give you some indication as to where / what it thinks is wrong.
The grounding of the pin in the under bonnet connector only provides more detailed diags.
See what this does first, we then need to establish if it is the ECU or DI/APC controlling the light
