Axle problems discovered - advice needed Posted by bmacb [Email] (#684) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bmacb) on Sat, 5 Dec 2009 13:34:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Shorter version.
In my new axle the "slot" for the for the small end of the inner boot is about 1 " nearer the center of the axle than on the axle it is replacing. Therefore if I clamp the boot over the slot I will have to stretch the boot (lengthwise) to have it fit over the cup. Would it be better to have the boot stretched but in the slot or clamped closer to the end of the axle (so it won't have to be stretched - but not in the slot)?
Long Version:
I am replacing axles on 97 5 Speed CSE with EMPI brand - the kind that come from my favorite site sponsor . The diameter of the big end of the inner boot on the new axle seems to be too small - I had no luck fitting over the cup and it is clearly smaller than the one I am replacing. So I decided to reuse the inner boot from the axle I am replacing. The old inner boot is the same as the new except the large end is bigger around. FWIW I was surprised how easy it way to get the tripod bearing (used a puller from Autozone) off and then back on again. Anyway when I was fitting the old boot on the new axle I noticed that the indentation or "slot" in the new axle (where the small end of the inner boot is clamped) is about an inch nearer the center of the axle on the EMPI one vs the old. If I clamp the boot over the slot I will have to stretch the boot (lengthwise) to have it fit over the cup. My inclination is to ignore the slot and position the boot as it was on the old axle thereby avoiding any distortion (no stretching required) in the boot. The risk is the that cv grease will leak out of the small end - seems unlikely if clamped tightly
What would you do?
