Thanks for the suggestion but I don't that is the problem.
The boot I am trying to use fit fine , both over the cup and from a length perspective, on the old axle. The axle performed well (other than the clicking from the outer CV) so I think its a FPT axle with an FPT inner boot. So I think the problem is with EMPI (made in China) axle - which according to EEuro documentation is supposed to be a FPT axle.
The question remains is it better to have the boot clamped in the "slot" and stretched to fit over the cup and therefore slightly deformed or clamped closer to the end of the axle (so no stretching) but not in the slot?
Part of the reason I brought this up is to make people aware that there seem to some problems with the EMPI axles.
