Doing the boots in the car requires some cleanup before taking things apart.
Clean the axle between the boots thoroughly, starting with a wire brush, then spray cleaner and wiping it down to get all dirt off the axle. Clean the inner tripod from the boot inward.
When the tripod is pulled apart have a couple plastic bags to immediately place over the tripod housing and axle end. Secure with rubber bands. Take the bearing assembly off the end of the axle still in the bag. Slide both boots off and the new ones on.
Pounding on the axle, to get it out of the bearing, is asking to have bearing problems from brinelling (denting) the bearing races.
