Still too hot after thermostat replacement

Hi there,
I have a new to me '94 Aero. It had been getting too hot with a bulging top coolant hose. I replaced the thermostat and it is still getting too hot. The top hose is not longer bulging, but the fan isn't turning on until the temp gauge is in ~ 11 o'clock position, which seems to far too me. I have had other 9000's where they get to the 10 and then the fan turns on, so I don't think I'm crazy. The top hose gets reasonably hot after the replacement. Heat still works fine.
Other details which may be pertinent: 1) the thermostat is an aftermarket one from the Saab site; 2) I created a leak from the new thermostat. Damn.
Any ideas? Coolant temp gauge versus fan electronics?
