When something changes after a job then you know where to start looking. Find out in detail what was done. There are several ways to do an HG and only the full on job with a resurfaced head, new valve seals, etc., is really correct.
As for oil, Castrol Syntech is fine (I run 5/50 in my 9K) as is Mobil 1. I put M1 10/40 high mileage in my daughters' 9-3 and 9K, but they'd be fine with the 5/50, too. I don't like 30W in a turbo motor. I know it's supposedly fine in a 9K, but I tend to be paranoid and like the higher temp protection from the extra weight.
