My pore old (97) with slush box and the 'smaller' turbo... Easily.. outperforms juniors' 93/4? Aero 5 spd. His claim, not mine.
Never noticed any real world disadvantage to the smaller turbo (my first)..except a bit earlier boost onset. If that's a problem ? and this one I've 'nudged' for significant boost:-) Rarely needed, but occaisionaly one comes across one of those pesky 275 hp Altimas or Accords :-)
Having said that, the thing runs 'smoothly' no missing stumbling etc on 87 and becomes almost 'harsh/edgy' with performance on 94.. the ignition's (T5) capabilities is clearly one of the best parts of these cars.
Albeit it DOES take days/weeks(?) for the electronics to readapt to the octane changes. Pick an octane, then stay with it for a month at least.
I've settled on 89/91.
