I removed the balance shaft chain this past fall on my 2000 AERO automatic with 150,000 miles. It was pretty stretched, with some slack on the backside of the chain.
Once it was removed, my car had LESS vibration than before. It was very simple to do once the end bearing cap was removed. I pulled the chain out the opposite direction of normal engine rotation.
