It so happens I'm an advocate for keeping the balance shafts in play. However, I must say in 12 years on this board I have never before heard anyone claim there's any difference in results between automatics and manual cars when they're deleted.
As these cars are getting older, I can well understand the desire to take quick (and cheap) action to delete the balance shaft doodads when they're making trouble. Derf, maybe I missed some relevant posts? Can you elaborate on how you've come by the automatic-specific issues?
