When you are stopped at a light with the car in drive, first gear is engaged and slippage is taken up by the torque converter. If there was no torque converter, the car would stall.
Bottom line is if I was stuck in a traffic jam and wanted to use the AC, I would put the car in park or neutral and enjoy the cool air. I would not leave it in drive. After a couple of hours, you're torque converter and the transmission fluid would probably overheat.
For a minute or two, it really doesn't make a difference to the trans. Although you are certainly using more fuel in drive. Be green and be in neutral!
