The info I related was direct from my trans shop guru. The man was adamant that this is absolutely NOT a good idea, regardless of religious convictions, politely suggesting this activity would void his warranty.
Every time one puts the trans into D from N there is a mechanical shock to the trans' clutch system. Clearly over time and prolonged habit this..will.. damage the trans, no ifs ands or buts according to him.
This from a highly respected shop (they routinely supply 3 years unconditional! warranty. Eriksons gives 12 months in direct comparison ) Allegedly there is a small tradeoff on the slipping into N aspect..where if stuck in non moving traffic then there is the possibility of overheating the ATF by idling in D for extended periods, so going into N helps to prevent overheat. But, in Real Life, simply turning the engine.. off.. while being forced to wait, is the more clever and certainly more 'green' solution ;-)
