ToddH,

I believe the center line of the tire tread is where the bearing is designed to function. When you extend that outward you affect the load on that bearing. Think of a teeter-totter the fulcrum is equidistant from the loads. Changing the location of the fulcrum transfers weight too the extended side AND shifts weight away from the shortened side.
