SO I'm driving just a bit too aggressively in my 96 9000 (stage 3) when just at the peak of shifting from 2nd to 3rd (so the rpms are up) the tires start to lose grip, once in gear I hear a "pop". There it acts like i've miss shifted and then goes all the way into third. Of course the accompanying grating noise (almost sounded as if my exhaust had blown off and was hitting the ground) made me slow down yet I was able to shift into second. I had about 1.5 blocks to get to the parking lot so I figured "she's gone, at least get it parked." It drove all the way, around a few corners and up a small incline - same noise the whole time - and I parked it, putting it in reverse due to eons of Saab habit-forming. It was raining lightly and I had driven through a puddle or two so when looking under the tranny I saw a steady drip but couldn't tell if it was tranny oil or just water. There wasn't any evidence of leaks in my wake and I was too pissed to think it through any further. I had just assumed I'd split the transmission as it has been through a lot in her 200,000 miles of use but the more I think about it, and the more I remember seeing the damaged clutch disks when working at a saab shop a number of years back (like when the suppressor-like springs get busted or even bust out of the central housing part of the disk) and am starting to take on some measure of hope. Anyone had something like this happen to them that resulted in needing only a clutch job to remedy? Of course if I replace the transmission the clutch gets renewed as well so planning on a clutch job doesn't really set me back, it's just that I'm contemplating ditching the car altogether and looking for a replacement rather than throw more time and money at this one. If you all think I'm crazy downplaying the possibilities then I'll feel better about calling it quits. Any similar experiences would be great to hear. Thanks folks.
