Replaced rear speakers? Large framing nails work Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sat, 17 Apr 2010 06:30:01 In Reply to: Re: Aftermarket subwoofer/amp, stock head unit?, Simon S, Fri, 16 Apr 2010 21:20:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
To remove the Clarion head unit, I use four 16d x 3-1/4" framing nails stuck in the holes, insert my hand into cassette slot and pull. The nails release a small catch that holds the unit in place; you could also use knitting needles or anything else of similar size and shape.
If the original speakers in your car are the originals, I guarantee that the foam surround on the woofer is shot, leading to greatly deteriorated bass response - shine a light through the bottom hole and look at the top of the speakers in a dark place, if you see light they're dead. The factory speakers on my 1994 car are actually quite good, graphite cones and large magnets, but the foam surrounds were disintegrated - no bass. I recently "refoamed" the 6x9 woofers and cleaned off the tweeters from 16 years of crud and am overjoyed with my "new" stereo. The car now has more than enough bass (I have to keep the equalizer almost flat with a small boost in the lower midrange), and I'm hearing detail in music that I never knew was there - oh, that's a mandolin in the background! - some of my CDs have only been played in the car. One new favorite is The Rose Colella Trio, a trio of double bass, jazz guitar and female singer; with the addition of the lower registers the sound is awesome.
If you haven't touched your rear 6x9 woofers, I'd recommend this before anything else. You may not need or want subwoofers unless you listen to a lot of rap or bass-heavy tunes. If you don't want to attempt a refoam, and it's somewhat time consuming, there are many good aftermarket 6x9 speakers available; many here have used Infinity 2- or 3-ways.
