1988 9kT Freshly rebuilt motor - Hesitation & CEL

So I finally got off my ass and finished an engine rebuild I started 5 years ago on this car. Yes, 5 years ago. New rings, bearings, seals... the works. I took it for its first drive today and drove it a good 40 miles... so the lifters have risen etc. Runs reasonably smoothly for a fresh motor.
Anyways, an issue that I'm facing is an intermittent Check engine light (CEL) and some accompanying hesitation and power loss. There's the occasional pop out of the exhaust as well - but this car always did that. I don't have a perfect repro for when the light is thrown, but here are some of the times it happens:
- When I let boost build up past 5 psi (I have a numeric guage). Guaranteed to happen.
- When I've lifted while coasting down a slope. Happens sometimes.
- When I let revs get higher than 3 - 3.5k. Happens pretty consistently.
Thoughts? Ideas on what to check?
