The DI looked fairly new so the previous owner probably did have it replaced. He was servicing at a Sunoco station, so they probably put in what they thought were the right plugs (not knowing). I'm surprised that they didn't use Bosch (which are crap too).
I was planning to check the plugs once I got the car on the road, but the MPG was immediately noticable (was getting around 22 MPG in town), so figured I better check it out. Those Autolite's looked in pretty good shape too.
Just to answer the other questions... my 97 Aero (black) is manual transmission. I drove it 75 miles down to R.I. averaging 75-85 MPH and got roughly 25 MPG. Changed the plugs down there and got 30 MPG driving the same way back. This is pretty typical milage from what I was getting on my previous two manual tran Aero's (96 and 97).
I did top the gas off in RI, but wasn't even down a half tank. Plugs make a difference.
