Head Gasket Seating Quesion(long) Posted by DickT [Email] (#1628) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DickT) on Sun, 6 Jun 2010 09:07:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm replacing the HG on a 96CSE auto with 214k because of oil in the coolant.
Compression readings (cold) were 165, 167, 171, 171. When I removed the head the bolts at the ends felt looser than those in the middle. There had been oil leaks at both lower corners of the head. I can't establish for certain where the oil was entering the coolant passages but those corners are definitely suspect. The head measures 1395mm so I suspect it has been planed. Seems flat from various checks I've tried as does the cast iron on the block.
My question has to do with the aluminum around the oil drain on the plate at the rear of the block by #4. It's a tad higher than the the block deck. The impression on the old gasket bears this out. This could account for external and internal leaks at that corner of the head. Has anyone dealt with this by dressing down the aluminum? The risk would be an external leak, but it might prevent an internal one. I got out three broken studs yesterday and would approach this operation with a similar "do no harm" light touch.
