The aluminum is the rear plate which bolts to the block. The top surface is supposed to be level with the block deck, as is the timing cover in front. Since it was .005" or so higher, I thought it might have prevented a good seal on the gasket. I did take it down and it is now flush.
The head measures 139.5mm (not the 1395 I posted!). This is close to the lower limit of 139. I'm reluctant to plane it because I don't want to increase the compression ratio. I'm going to try filling the pitting with JB Weld. I've heard copper Permatex spray is helpful. I know gasket sealant is not normally recommended for this engine, but wondered if anyone has had experience with this.
