Walk to the rear of the car. Look at the ex pipe tip. A healthy engine has a light grey/brown dry tailpipe tip. Black and /or sooty = serious issues... and a 'fairly' reliable barometer for the overall state of the machine as well.
That's My personal, walk away right now, test for any car and you asked.
As for the rest? condition, condition and Lowest mileage and owner history possible.
Remembering that even the most beaten down of Saabs, retain their good looks well into their dotage.
