I "rebuilt" a turbo in a Classic 900 using a turbo "cartridge" from a rebuilder. The "Cartridge" is merely the center section of the turbo, shaft, seals, turbine and compressor all rebuilt to spec. One removes their old turbo from the car, unbolts the housings (taking careful note of how they are "clocked" on the cartridge), and bolts the housings onto the new center cartridge. Worked a treat, and only took a little longer than a straight swap.
Of course, your turbo housings must be in good shape, and the wheels must never have touched the housings.
Cost ran a bit more than half the cost for a full rebuilt turbo.
