Fuel pump feed 'valves' question

Just replaced my Jb Weld encrusted (prev owner Or Saab dealer) Fuel pump valve as it was leaking/smelling. This was the Black one with the check valve. I bought eeuroparts replacements for both valves and the retainer plastic 'just in case' :-) having heard tales of woe on this repair.
Happily, replacing the valve was a 5 min job, mercifully simple.
My problem /concern is that the Original Black (although seriously messed/patched) valve the check valve operation was seemingly in the opposite direction from the new replacement one. (I think ?) Pressure From the pump side closed the valve on the old patched valve, while on the new valve, pressure TO the pump is prevented.
Confusingly.. the car runs 'fine' before and after valve replacement.. what am I missing? Was the old valve was so messed up it didn't work at all ??
