Got it for my daughter. Bought it at 138K, now has 168K. Has had some of the usual issues since getting it in '05. Some of the usual things were done before we bought it, as we got the car from friends who kept decent records. It's been a very good car, especially for my kid's first ride, and has put up well with her abuse. And been pretty cheap to keep (but I do 90% of all the work on it)
Assuming the one you're looking at doesn't have TCS and the tranny shifts well, these can be a fine car. Since you're handy, you should be fine. Check it out thoroughly, though. 9K are pretty easy to work on.
I also have a '96 CSE, which I recently drove from NH to NM, fully loaded. It was painless, comfortable, and got 26-28 mpg running 75-85. That car has 172K on it.
To many of us who have 9Ks, these are the best cars Saab ever made. Before the NM trip, I drove several entry-level cars priced around $20 grand. Not one drove as well as my 14-year-old 9K. Comfort, speed, carry capacity, safety, decent handling (especially if you do some tweaks). The 9K was the end of an era.
